Rocket Science? Not Really! – To put it Simply, Window tinting is a film made largely from polyester films which generally incorporate thin layers of tint in the form of metals, ceramics and dyes in order to achieve heat, fade, glare, light reductions when applied to glazing systems.
Within the window tinting industry there are many technical terms used when talking about window tinting films and performance, which we will try to simplify below in order to make it easier for you.
VLT (Visible light transpenerancy) is a term used to describe how dark the tint is and indicates how much light the film will let through in a percentage (e.g. 10%VLT film will let through 10% visible light, blocking 90% from coming through)
The most common light grade film used in the Australian residential market is a 15%VLT so this is a good base line to work from. Tint Direct would classify 15% VLT as a medium
light grade film
At Tint Direct we classify Home Window Tinting Film in these light levels
Dark – < 10% vlt (Usually used for media rooms etc.)
Medium – 15% vlt ( most common residential film used)
Light – > 25% vlt ( used for areas that want higher light levels, north facing etc)
Very Light – > 40% vlt ( usually speciality film almost invisible to the naked eye, usually used to maintain night time views)
TSER (Total Solar Energy Rejected) refers to the amount of solar energy (including: visible light, infrared radiation and ultraviolet energy) that is rejected from entering through the glass. TSER is a more accurate way of measuring heat rejection. Be Aware! That this is usually measured through 3mm glass, however some companies will supply the TSER when installed to thicker glass which will increase the percentage.
VLR ( Visible Light Reflectance) is the percentage of visible light that is reflected by the window tint or glass. As a rule, the lower the number the blacker the window film will look. The higher the number the more mirrored the window film will look.
With the exception of only a few specialty solar films. Home Window Tinting should come with the dry adhesive, which is a much more stable option over long periods of time.
Dry Adhesive is chemically activated when applied using the mounting solution, and is dry and not sticky to touch until adhered to the glass. Pressure sensitive adhesive (typically used in the automotive industry is tacky like sticky tape upon touch/pressure.
Glare Reduction is directly related to the VLT. Simply put the darker the window tinting in your home the more glare you will block. For example a night shift workers bedroom or media room might us a 10%vlt, whilst a living space facing south might us a 25%vlt.
TSEA (Total Solar Energy Absorbed) is the amount of energy absorbed by the film. This is relative to how hot the glass will get. Historically high absorption films were often dark and black in appearance, but modern low-E and IR blocking films can also have high heat absorption. Because of the extra heat held in the film they are not recommended for certain types of glass.
